About Double Glazing (DGU)

Double glazing, also referred to as Sealed Insulated Glass Unit (IGU), consists of two panels of glass in a sealed unit separated by a layer of air or argon gas.
  • Excellent insulation performance, reducing energy costs
  • Reduces outside noise
  • Reduces condensation
  • Different glass types such as Low-E and Laminated glass can be used to further improve energy efficiency and noise control.

There are very few instances where a Double Glazed Unit can be installed to an old window or door. If you wish to enjoy the many benefits of Double Glazing then you will need to replace your windows and doors.

Frequently Asked Questions

How are Windows replaced?

With old aluminium windows, the sashes and “bricked in” sub-frames are generally removed – “back to brick”. The new windows are then “angle trim fixed” similar to Commercial Shopfront windows.

Many timber windows double as structural support for brickwork above and roofs. In such instances only the sashes may be removed. We endeavour to cover all old timber frames with angle trims wherever possible.

Our Objective is to make the replacement window and doors look as though they are an “original” install and not an afterthought. To achieve this takes skill and experience.

Can the existing wall opening size be changed or a new opening made?

Generally this requires structural work and involves other trades such as carpenters, plasterers and bricklayers.

In many cases structural changes will be required and Council approval may be required.

If we cannot do this work we will refer you to our building industry partners including registered builders.
